Follow Up to my question about Twitter followers

This is just a quick follow up to my post from earlier today. First of all I am using this post to apologize to you for the fact that the comment system (I use Disqus) was down today (thanks Gavin Mountford for pointing it out to me). I had to contact them to get it resolved. It is fixed now, but for some reason this morning’s post still shows the error.

I asked you guys the question how many followers you think you need to be successful on Twitter. The trend is the more the better, but in this mornings post I build a case that this is not what I believe to be true.

I attended a webinar last night about social media and the 2 “gurus” presenting this webinar, claimed that you should get as many followers as you can. One of them proceeded to tell us that he  managed to get over 100,000 followers in about a month. He also told us his secret for success on Twitter. Can you guess what it was? Build relationships with all your followers. Personally answer all tweets that come your way. Did I mention that he claims to only spend 10-15 minutes a day on Twitter?

How believable is that? It made me feel stronger about my position, rather than adjusting my views closer to his statement. How do you feel about this? Are you working hard to add more followers? You can share your comments again. Keep them coming!

    I think the amount of followers you have on Twitter adds to the social proof aspect of things so when a prospect or someone who follows you, notices that you have 20,000 followers, it looks better than having just a few hundred.

    Having said that… I only have around 4500 followers. I’ve never used any software, and most of my followers are people I’ve either manually added or have followed me from my content. I also have autofollow on so my following is close to my followers.

    In the grand scheme of things, I don’t really think having 20,000+ followers makes the slightest bit of difference unless you interact with those people and share a HUGE amount of value.

    I’ve never been a great twitter fan, always have preferred FB myself as it’s much more powerful.

    But, I can be converted :-) especially if it only takes 15 mins per day!

    I totally believe you have to have the interactions with the people who are talking with you…When I figure it is a bot i tend to ignore and even delete. If I see that someone has added me yet only has a one way flow even if they have 20K= followers, I am not interested. I heard someone say the other day about choosing your platforms that if you are not going to be there consistently , then do not start at all as the expectation for social media is that you are accessible.

    100,000 followers in a month? Wow, I’m impressed and suddenly feel a need to talk to more tweeps! I definitely agree that establishing a good Twitter presence is all about the conversation. I do my best to respond to all of my tweets that come in on a daily basis. My most loyal Twitter followers are the ones that I talk to often, and I know that if my name ever came up in a conversation between them and another person that they would gush about me any given day. :) They’re awesome!
