Keyword research is a critical step in setting up an online marketing strategy. Unfortunately, it is also the step that very few understand well enough. By not selecting the right keywords it is very likely that you will waste a lot of valuable time. It is crucial that you understand what you are doing keyword research for. This has a significant impact on how you go about selecting your keyword phrases.
So, let’s get started. Chances are that you will go to Google first and type in a phrase that summarizes your main topic. Now you have the results in front of you, but how do you know if this keyword phrase is worth paying attention to?
When it comes to keyword research, the following three question are the ones that need an answer:
- which keyword phrases do people type into the search box when looking for information
- are people who type in a certain keyword phrase likely to spend money online
- how significant is the competition for the keyword phrase you are targeting.
So far, I am sure you have been able to follow me without a problem. Here is where it becomes trickier. Most people do the research without taking into account what the research is for. After all it is your target market who dictates what is a good keyword and what is not.
Generally, there are three different types of markets for which the keyword research is performed:
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Pay per click (PPC)
- Article marketing
The issue is that all three channels have different criteria that will make a keyword of interest. If you don’t take your marketing channel into account, you only have about a 30% chance that your are using the correct keyword phrase criteria. That makes this approach not just inefficient, but practically useless to determine profitable keyword phrases.
In the next articles in this series we will explain how you should collect keyword phrases and identify opportunities to make money day in and day out. I have divided the content in 3 parts:
- Generate a big list of keyword phrases
- Identify keyword phrases with potential
- Measure the competition strength
Once you are done with this keyword research series, you will be able to collect your own list of profitable keyword phrases, that you can target for unlimited traffic to your website regardless of the marketing channel you are targeting.
