Unlimited traffic from one-way links in your menu

We all can use more one-way links to empower our web properties. With the arrival of WordPress 3.0 it has become extremely easy to generate these one-way links. But before I show you how to do this, I would like to point out a few other great new features that WordPress has build into their software.

The one that stood out immediately for me was the easy way to update all plugins at once. And, of course, the new default theme – Twenty Ten – which makes it super easy to upload custom headers and backgrounds. There are also significantly improved security features.

But of all the new features I like the new menu option the best. It is so easy, that anyone can do this. I made a short video to show you how to create your own custom menu from scratch in under 5 minutes. Including a one-way backlink!

Here is the video:

Are you using WordPress 3.0? How do you like it. Have you used some of the new features yet? Share your experience in the comments. It is much appreciated.

    Hi Karin!

Thanks for this informative post. I am always so impressed with the value of what you present. I am a little confused about the backlink, though. Do I have to have 2 blogs to take advantage of this? Could 2 people do this for each other? My intention to to visit you much more frequently and start implementing many of your strategies! Thank you again!

Hi Nancy, thanks for your kind words. There are many things you can do with these menus. You can use them for internal links (links from your home page, with the highest page rank, to an inner page), you can link to other web 2.0 properties like your facebook page or your YouTube channel. I would not use this to link to someone elses website, not even if they would do the same for you. The reason for this is that when they follow the link they will go to that site and you may have lost a valuable visitor. But that is up to you obviously.
By the way, if you like my blog posts, you may want to come back next week. I am starting something very special next week, and I am pretty sure that you will like it….

Karin ~ Thanks for sharing this! I didn’t know that was an option in the admin of wordpress. I have WPMU 3.0 and I love it so far. The flexibility is great with the only downfall being that some older plug-ins are not compatible and can cause problems. Great informative video!

Hi Howie, I agree with you. There are plugins that are not working properly in 3.0. But the build in functionality is so much better, that it is worth it.

    Karin,
Thanks for not only talking about creating a menu but actually showing how to do it. I have not upgraded by wordpress blog yet, but when I do I will use what you have taught here. By the way, congratulations on being the top syndicator. You are always tops, but only get the recognition once in awhile.

    Hey Karin,

This is pretty cool. I just started playing around with that new menu feature on one of my blogs. I didn’t know you could stack them in levels like that, gives me some awesome ideas. It is also very cool that you can reorganize the order of links as well.

Basically, from what I can tell doing this with categories builds an effective silo structure which is something Google wants to see now. For the longest time I had been complaining to WordPress to let us post to specific pages. This is nearly as good, just make your categories appear to be top level pages! Sweet.

I found your blog through the TSA. It is very informative.

Oh gosh Karen – this is blowing my mind … oh the menu building there is to be done. What’s interesting is that I think I’ve had this ability for awhile now ’cause custom menus are built into the themes that I use. But obviously, I had not the full concept of how they might be used and this backlinking point that you make has just exploded the possibilities for me.

    Thank-you so much!

Awesome feature. I can’t wait. I say that knowing you (and other readers) will flip out; here’s why: I am sooooooo far behind in upgrading my WordPress version. And frankly, a bit nervous about doing it. I am hoping to work with someone with far more tech savvy than me so I don’t screw up and destroy (lose) something of value! Been in contact with one person so far.

    WOW Karin
Thanks for sharing this, I was not going to upgrade because you know things can change when you do and not always the way we want. But after seeing the power of the upgrade I will have to change.
It looks like wordpress is going the way of CMS which gives it more flexibility then ever before. This is going to empower a whole new army of marketers.
    Thanks and God Bless

Great tips! Have you checked out suffusion yet? I have been using it for almost a year now and it is awesome.

So many great features and many plugin options are already incorporated in the there.

One of the coolest things is if you have a great idea of suggestion for the theme you can email the guy who created it. He is super cool and actually make changes and sends them out with the next update.

Thanks for sharing! Have a great day!
