RSS feedIf you want unlimited traffic to your website keywords are a key ingredient. Last week I mentioned the importance of finding the right keywords for your niche. Today I would like to explain to you the first step to finding profit pulling keywords, which is the generation of a long list of keyword phrases.
The first thing we need to do is come up with a number of ‘root keywords’. This is a critically important step, since all subsequent keywords will be derived from these root keywords. That is why you always have to make sure you have a solid set of root keywords to start out with.
In this stage of your keyword research you do want to go as broad as possible. With broad I mean that you strive to find as many terms that mean the same thing, but in different words. To demonstrate how to build a list of keywords I will use the same example as I have used in the past: weight loss pills (remember that this is merely an example. I do not suggest that you actually target this exact niche).
The most obvious root keyword phrase is ‘weight loss pills’. However, many people will simply leave it at that and start generating more keywords based on this one phrase. In order to create a long list you have to go broad, using various words of similar meaning. One tool you can use to come up with more words is the Google Keyword Tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). For the best results you should log into your Adwords account. If you don’t have one, you should set one up for free.
Enter your root keyword(s) and click “Search”. Look through the results and see if you can find any other keywords that mean the same thing but don’t include the root keywords “weight”, “loss” and “pills”.
These are other keywords that we can use, based on Google’s Keyword Tool:
diet
management
product
fat burning
ephedra
prescription
program
With these new keywords, we can mix them up to form more root keywords. For example:
diet pills
weight loss management
weight loss product
ephedra weight loss
weight loss prescription pills
weight loss program etc.
This is an example of how you can create a long list of relevant keyword phrases.
Another tool that you can use (for FREE) to expand your list even more is kwmap.com. For our example that would look like this:
Here we can find even more words that are the equivalent of our root keyword phrase. You go through the same routine to find more keyword phrases and you write them down. If you want you can repeat this routine with other sources, such as Amazon.com, Yahoo. com etc.
With the list that we have developed so far, we go back to Google’s Keyword Tool. Enter all your root keyword phrases. Switch the match type from “broad” to “phrase” and go to views in the top right corner to select the columns to display. Choose global monthly searches and estimated avg. CPC (Cost Per Click) and click ‘search’.
You have created your list of keywords. Don’t worry if some of the keywords are not relevant. We will take care of this later. Download the entire list by clicking the “download” button at the top of the list. Next week we will discuss step 2, where we will identify the “golden” keywords.
