We just finished our 3 week profit pulling keywords series, so I hope that you have a list of profit pulling keywords for your niche. If not, you may want to go back and read the keyword articles from the past 3 weeks and create your own list. You will need it to make the most out of todays topic which is the use of tags on web 2.0 properties. Tags can give you very valuable one-way backlinks to your site. It actually gets even better than that. You can have others promote your tags without you even realizing it!
So, let’s get started. Tags are an incredibly important part of an online strategy. Essentially, tags and keyword phrased have the same purpose. It is text which relates to your niche and the content about that niche. Both humans and search engines use these tags to get a quick indication what your web site is all about. Don’t underestimate the importance of tags though. Frequently, search engines will index your site based on the tags you are using.
The nice thing about this is that you can use multiple tags and as a result readers can come to your site through different searches. For example, the social bookmarking lens I made a while ago. Every lens has an opportunity to add tags. I did that for this lens. This is an important step, because each tag is an incoming link to your lens.
If you have 10 tags, that means 10 one-way backlinks to your lens. Now lets take a look at a Squidoo tags page. One of the tags I used in my social bookmarking lens is unlimited traffic, so let’s check it out. Type in: http://squidoo.com/tags/unlimited+traffic and you will see a page with lenses that all have ‘unlimited traffic’ as a tag:

As you can see this page contains multiple lenses. All these lenses use the same ‘unlimited traffic’ tag. The order in which the lenses are listed is determined as follows: the top is reserved for lenses with the tag as primary. Those lenses are listed in the order they were published. Underneath those lenses you will see the lenses that have the tag listed, but not as primary tag.
You can imagine that these pages can become quit popular by themselves. So popular, in fact, that they can get a page rank. Since they are on a high page rank web 2.0 platform, it is not uncommon for these tag pages to have a higher ranking than your own lens.
If you have 10 tags, you have 10 inbound links on 10 pages, potentially with a higher page rank than your own page and all from one piece of content. Are you starting to see the power of this?
Of course, you don’t want to overdo this and have 100 tags for a given lens. On Squidoo, if you have more than 10-15 tags, you are likely flagged as a spammer. You can get your lens deleted and they can even cancel out the entire account!
The majority of the web 2.0 properties use tags, with a similar structure as Squidoo. This provides a very easy way to create one-way backlinks to your site, using the same content! To improve your links even further, you can bookmark your tags pages to create more attention to those pages. This can only help your original website.
