Unlimited traffic to your website with free information

Free information is a great way to get unlimited traffic to your website. My friend Rebecca Happy wrote a blog post recently about “moving the free line”. This made me think deeper about free information. Here are my conclusions so far:

First of all, I know that the primary reason people come online is to get information. If asked, everyone will say that they want the information they are looking for to be free.

unlimited traffic to your website from free information

But let’s think about this for a minute. Information online has been free from the early days of the internet. There are millions of articles, free reports etc. There are three main reasons why all these resources are free:

  1. Early pioneers online could not figure out a viable way to charge for it. The resistance was enormous, because the payment options were not very secure.
  2. At the end of every free article and woven into a free ebook are “offers” for paid products or services.
  3. As a bonus for a paid product or as a gift to entice people to buy their products, expecting prospects to think “wow, if this information is free, how unbelievable will the paid product be.

Free information resources like teleseminars, audios and videos often have an offer at the end. That should not surprise you. There is no business model that is viable without collecting money for products/services provided at some point in time.

This business model is very similar to the time sharing business, where you get offered a vacation for free or very little money if you are willing to sit in on a presentation that takes maybe 10% of your vacation time. Some people love it, others hate it.

Believe it or not, this model actually can help you in two ways. First of all, you can enjoy some high quality advice at no cost and secondly, you can learn from the way others promote their product(s) and apply it yourself.

When you take notes, you can learn from all aspects of the call. For example, listen for the lead-in to the offer. Listen to the description. See if they offer a reduced price just for the call. If they do, how much of a discount do they give. Are they offering bonuses? If so, what bonuses do they offer. What is the value of the bonuses (compared to the price of the product). How do they create a sense of scarcity. Is there a time limit or a number of products limit.

I could go on and on. By taking notes on these free presentations you can learn a lot from your competition. Take notes and in a few short sessions you can get a good picture of what works in online internet marketing.

As Rebecca pointed out in her article, the quality of the information provided for free is improving every day. It is incredible what is given away, just to impress the buyer. It obviously works in a lot of cases. So, next time you see advertising for a free webinar, report or other free event, sign up! You will get great information and you can apply their sales techniques to your own business.

Are you one of those people, who are not listening to teleseminars because there is a sales pitch at the end of the presentation? Or do you love these free seminars despite the fact that there always seems to be a sales part at the end. Share your views with us. They are much appreciated.

I’ve found that more and more webinars, conference calls beside the great information provided offer a twist in presentation. Something that I can apply to my business, as well as help my referral partners implement into their business. Also, a lot of them lately have been more about raising awareness, and thus an indirect sale, rather than outright request for purchase.

The best piece of information I received somewhere along my journey was to watch andlearn what the leaders were doing. I often say yes to particpate in things both to learn from and observer/student perspective…and becsaue I admire and like the person/group/business and I am sure to learn something.
Where I think the most success will be had is when you put your own spin on things and make it innovative….the way Seth Godin tells us to all the time. Stand up and create your own way. It is good to learn from the masters inthe traditional apprenticeship model and then go and fly.
Even in the offline world of community development and systems change movements are being born because one person decided to stand up and do things differently that resonated with a group of others.

When I attend free seminars, workshops, or webinars, I look for the structure of the event and the ability to duplicate easily. You are right that we can learn a great deal by observing, taking notes, and keeping an open mind! Thanks Karin for a great post!

    Best regards,

    Karin,
The free seminars have taught me so much. In addition, I enjoy listening to and learning from the pitch—with pen in hand, documenting the ideas that are noteworthy. We are lucky to have a volume of information at our finger tips.

You are so right, if you don’t give away boat loads of free information your chances of getting a lot of followers is very slim. I actually did a video training on the basics of internet marketing. It was a 6 part series 30 minutes on each video. It was very simple but for the newbie they saw immense value in it. I received more free traffic to that page than any other I have created.

It all comes down to the “you must give value before you can receive” philosophy. By sharing our knowledge and experience, we help those coming after us to avoid some of the pitfalls and learning curves, ultimately making their journey a little bit easier and developing their trust and loyalty in return.
    Great post Karin!!

    Karin,
You make an excellent point here…there is good value in much of the free information shared….and that line has definitely moved. Being willing to give more value is a good philosophy and top marketers understand this. Those seminars, webinars and ebooks can be very helpful!

    Wishing you continued success,

    Karin,
I love your perspective. Yes, the free information is amazing but there is also the opportunity to learn as there always is.
It is smart to consider the option of learning something from an offer rather than assuming you are not interested before you know what the offer is.
As you said, taking notes is essential whenever you want to be able to fully understand something new and then be able to apply what you’ve learned to an endeavor that truly benefits you. As Jim Rohn often said, “don’t rely on your memory!” and I know that’s true for me.
Great topic and fabulous post, Karin!

    Great post, Karin (and Rebecca)!

Being in an era where free information overflows, we need to be careful with the kind of info we want to take in. Besides taking our precious time, conflicting ideas may actually confuse and eventually cause us not to take action.

I think we need to stick with one strategy at a time and master it quickly before we move on to the next.

    Karin,
I am one of those people who has attended countless free teleseminars, only to sign up for some expensive training. Always I have gained from the free teleseminar and also gained from the paid training. There is so much to learn and so many great people offering their knowledge and sharing their experiences. Problem is, I can get so caught up in listening to so many teleseminars and webinars that I don’t have enough time to create and market my own products and businesses.

    Hi Karin,

Great article! Free information is great and I have learned so much from what other people are putting out. I could spend everyday just reading other peoples blogs!!

When I first came online I hated that everyone gave you something free but then had an offer at the end. Now I realise that actually none of us would be here building a business if no money ever changed hands! It is just a matter of being selective of which offers you take up. If you think it is something which could help you or your business then go ahead! Personal Development is sooo important!

Learning about the information or topic is important to me and learning how the person delivers the information and their goal for doing so also is important. There is so much to learn out there that at times I just get overwhelmed. Thanks for posting!

Hi Karen, I love free events that give useful information and I am usually able to resist the offer at the end unless it is something that I really need. I had never thought about listening to how they give the offer and learn from it. What a great idea thanks. Belinda

    Hello Karin,

Enjoyed reading this post and I do not mind the pitch at the end of what ever presentation I may be viewing. If the presentation has offered value to me in one way or the other I am the one who walks away feeling like I really did get something out of it for free.

And if the free part was good I just very well might be interested in getting more even though it will cost me…

Everyday people are selling something to someone. Sometimes we buy and sometimes we don’t. It has a lot to do with where are emotion is at, at that moment, weather we buy or not.

    Good post…Keep them coming :)
