What not to do in your email marketing campaign

I will start off by giving you fair warning. In this post I am on a little bit of a rampage. You see, last week I just finished cleaning up my emails and deleting those that I did not think I needed (any longer), when I received some emails that made my hair stand strait up (not easy when you have curly hair).

Here is what transpired. I received an email from a group that I did not want to continue to follow. I clicked the unsubscribe button and followed the instructions. I arrived at a page that told me that I had successfully unsubscribed. Great (I thought). Next day, I received another email from this same email address, even though I had unsubscribed.

I clicked on their unsubscribe link again. It turned out that in stead of completely removing me from their lists, they had moved me from one list to another. I had to unsubscribe again and hope that they would not continue this practice. To me this type of behavior is worse than sending someone too many emails. This is spamming at its worst.email marketing

The other spamming tactics that has gained popularity is to send you emails with misleading headlines. Here is what I mean by that. I am receiving a lot of emails lately with a headline such as: “Re: your download”, when I have not signed up for anything. This to draw you in, thinking you are receiving a free download. In these emails they advertise a product, which makes the title of the email misleading and in my opinion pure spam.

When I get an email like that, I check if their title is legitimate. If not, I simply go to the bottom of the email and press the unsubscribe button. I will not stay on their list (if I manage to get off).

Now that I have told you about my frustration, I am wondering if I am the only one with this experience. Are you experiencing this also? Do you have other email marketing tricks that bother you? Which emails do you like? Share your opinions in the comments.

    Hi Karin,

Too bad you didn’t post a picture of your hair standing straight up. :) I can feel your frustration; it is very annoying. And they do that because most of us would just give up.

I don’t have any “war” stories like yours, but then I tend to just hit my delete button rather than unsubscribe because I have heard stories like yours where it doesn’t work any way.

    Enjoy your vacation!

Ewwww! I would NEVER do that! If someone doesn’t want to receive my emails, then I don’t want to send them to them! I try not to take it personally (still working on that). I try to remember that I don’t want to receive emails about a subject matter that I’m not interested in. Try to get me interested in big game hunting or sports…NOT going to happen! Just because I’m passionate about health and fitness, it doesn’t mean everyone is (they SHOULD be, but that’s not reality).

I received an email today with the subject ‘would you like to catch up?’ creating the impression that this person actually wanted to meet with me …. instead it was a campaign to sell me into an event. I was totally unimpressed and the credibility and integrity of the sender was called into question. It told me very clearly, that if this is how they intended to deceive people into attending their event, then they were probably someone I did not want to be learning anything from.

Karin this is the bane of my existence. That is the primary reason I now rarely opt in anywhere. These guys will hound you to death with this practice. It is nice to not be alone.

I feel your pain….I have to agree with you about the one where it looks like they are replying to your request. I love to learn so I am always subscribing to some new training. Thank you for the education. I will pass this on.

    Always Balancing,

    Rafael

Mark S. is definitely on the right track. If you want to get a professional looking email address, Id recommend buying your name domain name, like or ajf 8 If its common it might be difficult to get, however, be creative and you can usually find something.

I had to work like heck to get off a Forbes list two years ago. Including two emails and one letter to their compliance department. I was pissed that they wasted my time and ignored best practices not to mention the requirement to honor an unsubscribe request within 10 days. To this day I work hard to steer away from their products.

I too am fussy about what emails I open and am quite liberal with the use of my delete key. I certainly don’t think you’re alone! However, it is difficult sometimes to get my emails read by people, even when I know them..such is the dreaded spam filters!
